Hey, do you recognise this house?! It looks sort of familiar, and sort of friendly too .....
yes, this portrait of my french country home was painted by the talented Patricia van Essche over at pve design, and my amazing giveaway today will give a lucky winner the chance to commission a portrait of their own home or , if they prefer, their pet!
Patricia trained in design, and for 15 years she worked in New York City as a designer and design director for Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and Liz Claiborne. Pretty impressive!!
Today she runs pve design, and creates original artwork and illustrations for clients. This can be in the form of a house or store portrait, the portrait of a favourite pet, or decorative or pattern design. She also has a gorgeous line of stationery, selling at her etsy shop.
I love her style, it is modern, and feminine and with that essential bit of whimsy. And as she has family in France, there may well be a French touch peeking through now and again!
So what would you ask Patricia to draw if you were the lucky winner? ......
your horse, your house, your hound ..... or maybe just your favourite corner in the home?
To enter this fabulous giveaway you need of course to leave a comment below, but you can enter more than once ...
for a second entry pop over to Patricia's store and come back to tell me what you like best
for a third entry share the news of the giveaway on facebook, twitter or pinterest.
Thank you to Patricia and to everyone else who has given so generously for my month of giveaways,
and good luck to you all!! The winner will be drawn next Tuesday at midnight Paris time.
Which once again brings me neatly around to the winner of last weeks Provence Rug:
the random draw pulled out the name
Pam Meier, Minneapolis
Well done Pam, just get in touch with your address and the provence rug and soap dish will be on its way to you!

ReplyDeleteI have admired PVE's work for a while. I too think her style is unique and beautiful. I would choose our cheery den when we spend most of our family time! Thanks for the opportunity!
ReplyDeleteDefinately the personalized monogram! I've always wanted to have one, and hers are a bit different....unstructured, not so sterile perhaps would be the word? Love them!
ReplyDeleteOh, that's an E-Z question to answer, Sharon.....I'd ask your talented (and probably more patient than I am) friend to draw the Bichon Frise which seems to belong to the woman who's irritatingly telephoned me twice and irritatedly emailed me three times over the past week.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I can gather?.....she's the ex-girlfriend/fiancee (she never made this quite clear) of a man who won a raffle (part of the local Humane Society's fundraiser-event), to which I'd donated a commission (i.e., I'd paint whatever the winner wanted).
I should emphasize that she seems to have dated and subsequently dumped him SINCE he won the raffle, and that the raffle was held F-I-V-E years ago. I haven't heard from the man since the day he won it. She claims he "gave" it (presumably, the certificate) to her as a birthday present. I've explained to her that I can't consider doing the commission unless he asked me to do so. She tersely told me that was impossible, since she isn't SPEAKING TO HIM (!!!!).
Finally irritated, myself (she was, indeed, remarkably bossy), I asked her over the telephone "He gave you a ten-dollar raffle ticket for your BIRTHDAY???? You're probably better off without him"......
So, the woman is now angry at both her ex-boyfriend/fiancee AND me. Oh...I negelected to mention that she wants her painting by the end of next week; she'd intended on giving it as a present to yet another someone-else. That five-year-old commission is increasingly seeming like a virus let loose in a busy airport.
There's a very good reason that I inevitably raise my eyebrows and simply take a deep breath whenever someone tells me (and this happens quite regularly)some variation on "Oh, it must be WONderful to work for yourself!...no stress, no schedule, no having-to-please-other-people...".
My standard reply is that the trade-off for not working for any single boss in particular is that you end up working for twenty different bosses at any given time.
In any case....what a wonderful, genuinely fun give-away, and thanks for the introduction to Patricia's work (I'll be going to her website in a minute or so). For all the obvious reasons, I don't need to be "entered", but I expect everyone else will be eager to do so.
Level Best as Ever,
David Terry

ReplyDeletethanks for offering such a special giveaway.
I have a little 1920s-era cottage which is called a Cotswold cottage; very English, but with a French roof ... as if Dorothy in Oz came swirling out of the tornado from Europe and just plopped down here in this small California valley where nothing else much looks like it, as the majority of homes here are Mediterranean-styles, or Mexican/Spanish, throw in a little Italian ... but a lot of stucco and red-tiled roofs, not to mention decorative tile, tile, tile. My little house has actually been painted by a local artist but, alas, I am not in possession of the painting and, since it was actually painted when I was not the owner, I would much rather have it be painted as it is right now, with my husband and I calling it our own. We have lots and lots of great photographs, as my husband is a professional photographer by freelance, so I believe a really nice painting could come off his wonderful, clear shots ... and I would be glad to have you share the finished product, as it really is a cute little house, and it's been in my collective family almost from the time it was built ... lovingly handed down through the generations. When we were deciding about exterior paint, since it has quite a lot of black-iron accoutrements, I actually went to resource books and saw exactly what I wanted (pale blue trim with creamy white walls, which makes the black iron pop) in the famous Madame Castaing's decor books; her French country home, more of an estate/mansion, was painted in the same colors. (This is the renowned Madeleine Castaing who was a French antique dealer and interior designer, and I absolutely "die" over her interiors; gorgeous, elegant, and she is also known for this incredible aqua/turquoise/aquamarine/teal (can't explain it) BLUE which is a favorite accessorizing color of hers; I love her, LOVE HER!!!)
ReplyDeleteMy goodness, Sharon, could you be doing anymore incredible giveaways as you've delighted us with? Is this the best blog EVER? SUCH FUN!!! Thank you ... waiting in ANTICIPATION!!! So nice to be hearing and learning about Patricia van Essche ... her art is whimsical and wonderful!
Sharon I would be so thrilled for Patricia to paint my Himalayan Miss Belle!
ReplyDeleteShe is so very talented!

Hmmm...how many of you folks own west highland terriers? a lot, I gather.
ReplyDeleteMine are all corralled in the back bathroom just now. while I spent two hours, this afternoon, staking up 8 foot-tall deer-fencing at the back of the property (and, yes, I ran across two copperheads in that tangled exapnse), one of them managed to corner a skunk.
She didn't get a direct spray/hit....but it's still pretty terrible.
I wish these dogs would quiet-down....presumably they'll do so someday when they grow old.

In my haste and excitement over this post of yours (and tantalizing giveaway), I have tried to enter this comment no less than three times to no avail, so I am trying to s-l-o-w down!!
ReplyDeleteHere's where I am on things:
1. I added Patricia's pve blog address/link to our facebook page with a short squib to our friends about her amazing art and to check her out.
2. I added her to my "favorites" on my computer so that I can pull up her site/blog regularly, as I do you. I can't wait, although it will be time-consuming, to search back thru her four years of many postings to see all the cool things on her blog!
3. I left her a comment on said blog to tell her that I came over from your site, and how much I'm happy to find her and her blog, and that I'm looking forward to "discovering" her.
And, so now, I'm back with you to duly report in! At first glance, although it's a lot of eye candy just on her first blog page, I love the post about her desire for a little sewing corner at home. Me, too! I have a need to mend this or that, or make a curtain, sew a seam so, although I'm no seamstress and have no talent at sewing, I recently bought a sewing machine and I, also, am slogging thru my miniature bungalow, trying to find the right getaway nook for me and my machine! Love her little sketch of that special place to sit & sew!
Thanks, again, Sharon. Even if I don't win again, I am always loving your posts and tips for other interesting things in the blog/cyber world.
Many congrats to the lucky winner of that gorgeous Provence rug!
Last comment from me as I calm down but if Patricia wants to paint any of my three dogs or Old Man Cat, that's okay, too. The cat is nearing age 16; he's a tad grouchy in his old age. The beagle is the cutest; she's tiny and fierce but awfully pretty (although a butter ball ... we call her The Beaglet, a cross between a beagle and a piglet).
ReplyDeleteOh, ouch, I'm sorry, I don't mean to be hogging the blog comments but I forgot about a specific question you asked, and that was what we liked about Patricia's store (etsy) - well, how about all of it but, if I had to choose, and although I'm digging her monograms, it's a toss up between the Green Thumb Florist notecards and that awesome Emerald Cottage.
ReplyDeleteI lied; one more aside ... Paris Grrl early in the comments here mentioned she liked Patricia's Jazzy Living notecards; yeah, they are very stylish, and I love that grand piano, which made me suddenly think of Mr. Terry who, we learn, is also a pianist! Does my amateur rendition of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" count for anything, age 13; my last piano recital? Haven't played a note since, to my deep regret.
ReplyDeleteSharon
ReplyDeleteOh, this is a WONDERFUL giveaway. I would love for Patricia to paint our home. I worked on the design and drew it to scale (actually taught myself after countless draftsmen and architects did not "get" my wants), contracted it,and was at the building site everyday from sunup till sundown. We thought we would be there FOREVER>>>>>then our grandson was born and lives 200 miles away. We now have it for sale and are trying to move closer to him (and our Daughter and Son-in -Law.) It would be so nice to have such a personal and creative reminder of all of the work and wonderful memories we had in our dream home for the last 16 years....
Maureen

ReplyDeleteIt struck me, not comparing because they are both unique, that Patricia's artwork reminds me somewhat of Fifi Flowers ("Painter of Whimsy and Fun with a Parisian Flair!") which is another site/blog I love and, come to think of it, didn't I find Fifi through you, Sharon? I think so! It was awhile back. You are a WEALTH of great referrals.

I absolutely adore Patricia's work, and know that my dog Clementine would just insist upon the picture being a portrait of her...she's a total diva! :) Fingers crossed!!

Sharon I just love your blog. It is the first one I read each day. I would love to have a picture of our home, as we will be selling it soon after 25 wonderful years (downsizing). Thanks for your wonderful giveaways. By the way, how is your ailing horse?

ReplyDeletePatricia's works of art are delightful, really beautiful.
oh my! this would be a dream come true! I love Patricia and I love her work. I would be thrilled and honored to own one of her paintings. I would choose my house. Thank you for this wonderful give-away!
ReplyDeleteI love her paintings--I would definitely love to have her paint one of my pets, but it would be a tough call to decide if it would be my 18 year old cat, Abbie, or my black lab, Zoey. She is very talented!
ReplyDeletePVE is a daily read for me...I love Patricia's work and her lovely attitude. Her charm and whimsy make each painting fun to look at. I would love a painting of my old brick Colonial house, with my grandchildren sitting on a chippendale bench out front, and our Kitty (indoor only) sitting inside, high on her perch in the upstairs window, peering down at it all. I can just picture it...too bad I can't paint it, but I know Patricia could make a masterpiece. Thanks for the wonderful opportunity. PS I enjoyed finding your blog...c'est bon!
ReplyDeleteHer shop has so many treasures, but the hydrangea notecards would be my pick.
ReplyDeleteI love Pve and I read about your giveaway on her site. I would ask her to capture a daydream if I won.
ReplyDeleteI'm also posting on Facebook.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad to have found your spot through PVE - I'll definitely be a regular now! Your photos are lovely!
ReplyDeletePatricia's custom designed monograms are a great gift idea-I will have one designed for my daughter!
