the adventures of young ghetto

Ghetto's life is just one long adventure - his days are quite exhausting.

Being rather a undisciplined  bold dog, he always has to be where the action is, and hates to think he may be missing out on something.  I have developed the habit of checking around my feet before closing the car door, because nine times out of ten, he'll have jumped in behind me

Gibson in true Golden Retriever style, is fairly respectful of house rules here.   Ghetto says he's never heard of rules, be they house or any other.

Which is why yesterday morning I was woken by something warm and wet on my neck, you guessed it. Ghetto had come upstairs, pushed open my bedroom door and decided it was time for everyone to be up and about.  My reaction was to groan and roll over which brought me nose to nose with Gibson.  The look in his eyes said "I do know I'm not meant to be here, but it was his idea, and I thought you might be pleased to see us both after all ... maybe?"

SIGH ....

So they got me out of bed early, which was not such a bad thing, they were fed and sent into the garden, but before long Ghetto was barking.

I went outside to investigate and found him nose to bristle with a hedgehog.  I put him away once, but he went straight back and started kicking up a fuss again.  So the start to my day was yet further delayed, as - still in my jimjams -  I had to don gardening gloves and wellington boots, and crawl beneath a hedge to grab the hedgehog, then open our gate and cross the road to put him safe from wire-haired fox terriers.  I so hope nobody saw me !

In the afternoon, no doubt worried we may be bored, Ghetto managed to get himself shut inside the guest house, from where he tried to escape via ...... the bedroom window!
Can you see?    he even ventured out on to the roof and dislodged a tile AAARGH!

Hmmm.... life is going to feel pretty quiet around here, the day Ghetto goes back down to Nice!

Oh and by the way ..... August is going to be a month of giveaways on this little blog - one every Wednesday.  I already have three stunning gifts to be won, but there are five wednesdays in August!  If you have a really cool product that you would like to promote via a giveaway here, just send me an email and I'll see if I can fit you in!

  1. Oh my, Sharon! You aren't supposed to send out such funny posts right when folks are getting ready to go to bed! Such laughter keeps us up and disrupts our (snoring) partners! But it was well worth it, I can tell you! Little sneaky Ghetto, we wouldn't all adore her if she were otherwise, non?

  2. Sounds like he keeps things interesting around your place!

I have a dog that looks exactly like Ghetto, only solid black, named Tavi (short for Lady Octavia of Tavistock.) She literally flunked out of obedience school by annoying the other dogs too much. She is what my daughter calls a "hot mess." Nothing is safe in the out of doors...squirrels, cats, lizards etc. She is very intelligent and is a real hand-full for her middle-aged parents. BUT she is the FUNNIEST dog we have ever owned. She makes us all laugh constantly. She learnes tricks so quickly one can almost see her mind work. But she has a few sneaky tricks, like stowing away in the backseat of our cousins' car under a blanket and only emerging 20 minutes later, of course scaring them to death and nearly causing them to run off the road. She likes to sleep with us and does not really like to get up too early thank goodness. They say you do not get what you want but you get what you need. Obviously we needed a good laugh. Michelle H.

  5. Ghetto is oh so adorable whether he understands house rules or not. Gibson....well hubby and I know he is the most perfect dog to ever live on this earth. :)
The photo of the little hedgehog is gorgeous.
As for Ghetto getting into the Guest cottage, well the view from that window is particularly nice, so he does have excellent taste in choosing places to explore.
May you not be woken up by two dogs tomorrow morning.

  6. Your story is very amusing and finding me laughing. It reminds me of a dog named Dino that I had as a child and young adult who, was very much like Ghetto. Dino would constantly try and very often succeed at breaking free of the house. At that time we lived in a very busy city area. We would get phone calls from family and friends asking "Is Dino on the loose again", "I saw him chasing cars down Fairfield Avenue"! Sure enough he was no where to be found in and about the house. Off we went agian to collect crazy Dino. Dino also liked to bark-A GREAT DEAL. He would bark at the wind just to hear himself! After I married and had children we adopted a golden retriever named Daisy. She was so well mannered and behaved. At times if I found her doing something naughty, she would just look at me with those big brown eyes, stop the wrong doing and practically apoligize to me. What a difference between Dino and Daisy. However, I loved them equally.Your Gibson reminds me of my Daisy who has since pased away. It is such a joy to see that golden retriever face again on your blog. Thank you for sharing the antics of your beloved pets. Janet

  7. What a fun post! Thank you, Sharon. I know Gibson is the well behaved one (and good looks certainly run in his family,) but I must confess to a "petit penchant" for young Ghetto. What a hoot! I am glad we were blessed with decent WiFi while on the sailboat today, so I could read this from the deck of a cute marina on Thetis island, B.C. Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)

  8. This has put a smile on my face. Ghetto is so cute and I've never seen a hedge hog so close.
    You're brave and good hearted.

  9. Oh Ghetto! Sharon, I am laughing so loudly here in Seattle that I wonder if you can hear me all the way in Normandy! Having grown up with a series of boisterous, willful, trouble-making, rule-breaking, and much-loved terriers, Ghetto has won my heart. Have fun with your entertaining house guest! XO

  10. Sharon,
I love this post and must confess, I have a soft spot in my heart for your sweet, if mischievous, Ghetto. Gibson is so well-behaved, but you've got to love Ghetto's persistence. What a fun way to start the day, great picture of the hedgehog.

  12. So funny! Love the photo of Ghetto looking out the dormer window, about ready to jump. We have a golden...they really want to please their people, and tend to obey the rules quite well. Not so much for terriers, I think. Thanks for sharing.

  13. Hi Sharon

You had one adventurous day. What fun. I love the hedgehog - an excellent picture. Our dog one time tangled with a porcupine and it was very unpleasant. Several of the needle like quills got stuck on his nose. The trip to the vet was a challenge, he needed to be sedated, as the quills were embedded deeply. Ghetto is a great name for this little rascal.

  17. Why else have a loving pet if they just sit around and wait to be taken for a walk? I much prefer one like my cat, Matisse, who just this past few minutes managed to push the screen on the sliding door (to outside deck) and take it off the track, I turned away from my computer and his paws were trying to open it so he could sneak outside! Not exactly what I planned on saying...but one can get my drift. I like the curious, the thought-provoking, the mischievious, the ones more like me (hehehehe)and I guess Ghetto! I'll take him if you need respite. Just call.

  21. Ghetto is gorgeous and looks a wonderful bundle of energy and fun, but I've fallen in love with Gatsby. How cute is he and how on earth did you manage to come home without him to join Gibson and Ghetto - I'm sure I would have smuggled him home, lol!

  22. Well, you just made my day, Sharon (and the sun hasn't even begun coming up). for all my years in England and France, I've never done so much as lay eyes on an actual hedgehog (although my don at Oxford had one disconcertingly stuffed & made into a pencil holder).

In any case, that hedgehog's fascinating. Can you keep them as pets? Not that I'd do so in a house full of terriers, but the notion's appealing.

As for terriers? As I said, I have a house full of them (it feels full even when all but one are off at the vets or groomers). the latest irritating-beyond-belief, but inescapably charming habit has developed in just the past month. The youngest terrier (a seven month cairn given to me for my birthday) just wants to play and play and PLAY all day long, everyday. "Playing" consists solely of his bringing you the big blue ball, which you are SUPPOSED to keep throwing ALL DAY LONG, everyday.

I'm not that playful, myself. For better or worse, I do also have to work at one point or another during the day. So, I simply ignore the Big Blue Ball. To his credit and my irritation, the dog has learned to push his ball somewhere, such as under the vegetable bin or a trunk.....somewhere inaccessible, even at his size. Then, he rolls on his back, whining piteously and LOUDLY while sticking his muzzle as far as it can go into the space. You, of course, are supposed to respond to his distress-calls and retrieve the ball for him.

I did this for a few days ntil it occurred to me that, having tired of throwing a ball which he'd retrieve, I had simply switched roles with him....he dispenses with the ball, and I'M the one who fetches it?....

Talk about inversion of the natural order.....

    Thanks for the hedgehog picture.

  27. I read the post and then saw "Giveaway" and I thought it was Ghetto that you were giving away. It's very early here and I'm a bit slow, but had a great laugh. I probably would have taken him!

  28. It's almost the full moon...that's the excuse I'm using anyway to explain why my cats are acting like demons.

I loved your excursion with taking the hedgehog across the road. I've run outside in my pajamas more times than I can count, a bat flapping in the makeshift net I use to catch them in my old, charming house.

  29. Ghetto's little adventures could easily become a sweet story written for young children. You should think about writing up some of his adventures. Oh, a giveaway ~ that sounds exciting!

  30. Gibson and Ghetto are so precious! Your posts about them are always my favorites!

  31. Aw, how sweet! Look at those faces...they are adorable. Ghetto does have the look of a dog who is curious. My aunt had a Cocker Spaniel named Ponto and she kept one of the pups from his litter named Bingo who sounds a lot like Ghetto. Unlike Ponto who was very well behaved, Bingo was into everything and once chased a skunk under my aunts house...needless to say, she had to call someone to deodorize beneath the house to neutralize the smell. Just one of the many antics he got into. HA

I'm looking forward to your giveaways! :)

  32. Oh he's tooooo cute! His antics make him irresistibly endearing!! And that face! You can't possibly be mad at him.

  35. I have a philosophy about being 'caught' gardening in my gown.

If a neighbor sees me, it is in poor taste, lacking intelligence & improper to speak of it. Ever.

  37. he is adorable and you should be writing a novel about his antics!!!!..in my experience all terriers are huge characters....also hedgehogs have an irresistible scent to The Lodger too, he creates a right song and dance if one is near!!
