Happy Bastille Day! Sharon,I'm sure there will be lots of events and parades in Paris, but just curious as to what your area does to celebrate? Have a wonderful weekend!
Happy Bastille Day, Sharon! I will spend this evening trying to calm my Ben from the noise of the fireworks, he is petrified!!! Hope it is not the same for Gibson...I saw your comment on I Dream Of about Jeanne and I knowing the same elephant in Botswana. ;) My response post is up!
One of the best memories of my teen life...Paris on Bastille Day! I was 17. It was 1969. Three American school girls. We took the train from the Universite' at Nanterre to Paris. We bought chic dresses and watched the parade on the Champs Elysee. Although Charles De Gaulle had left office in the spring, he was in the parade. (PURE HISTORY) I tried my first escargot on the Eiffel Tower midst the fireworks. The handsome waiter gave me the menu for a keepsake. I still have it and appreciate it's mid century flair. Happy Bastille Day to you and France, Sharon! ~Lynne w/L.
I've normally holidayed in France in June and early July, leaving before le quatorze Juillet, but I have spent the day in Calvados and in Morbihan and could not find any kind of celebration. They have put up some extra flags around the war monuments and the "city" has paid for a new bouquet in front of the war monument, but that's about it. There are some fireworks tonight, but that's at the medieval fair (where all flags are Breton, not French).
It was June 14, 1982, my first and only Bastille Day in France...got to see the parade on the Champ Elysees, air show, the festivities and the fireworks...glorious!
Dear "Dreams on 34th Street"....Okay, you HAVE to read Alice Kaplan's latest book: "Dreaming in French: The Paris Years of Jaqueline Bouvier Kennedy, Susan Sontag, and Angela Davis".
Kaplan's the widely acclaimed author of, also: "The Interpretor", "The Collaborator", and "French Lessons." Just go to her amazon.com biography......you'll get hooked. I suppose I should mention that she writes non-fiction.
"Dreaming in French" is where you should start, though, given that you were in Paris at age 17 in 1969. You couldn't possibly imagine 3 women more different from each other than Kennedy, Davis, and Sontag....but, for each of them, her year abroad in France changed e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g.
I expect that anyone who follows this blog would also (as I did last month) dive into this book and not come out until you reach the end of it.

Happy Belated Bastille Day to you. I was working a Bastille Party on Saturday were all the food, drinks & music were French. It was a beautiful party and everyone seem to have fun. The party was still going strong when I left at 11:30 pm.

We love our old French house. It's a joy to entertain here, to fill the house with family and friends. Good food, beautiful countryside, bits and pieces found in local brocantes, children, dogs, horses, all this in a deep green valley in the heart of Normandy.
