a special kitchen ware brocante

Continuing to find ideas for those of you visiting France and looking for a good day out.  On the 13th  May next, in the beautiful town of Beaune, 3 hours south of Paris, there will be the annual sale and brocante event La Vaisselle des Chefs.

This is a charmingly French tradition, uniting the best restaurants in the area with the best antique and brocante dealers.  For the restaurants it is the opportunity to sell their crockery and cutlery that is due for renewal, and for the antique dealers a chance to meet with a specialised public, keen to buy anything culinary to embellish their kitchens at home.

On the website for the sale, you can even find a list of the Chefs de Cuisine  and the articles they will be contributing for sale.  We learn for example that one chef will be selling old hotel silver, another will be selling cutlery and table linen and that a château restaurant will be offering a service of porcelain decorated with their coat of arms.

I don't expect to get there that day , but if any of you make it, I would love to hear what you find: your very own culinary loot shoot!

  1. Last year while traveling around Europe we had a short stop in Beaune. It was on a Sunday market morning. Everything looked so delicious! We bought roasted quails, home made bread, ripe tomatoes, cheeses and had a picnic lunch just outside of the town. I regretted we couldn't spend more time in Beaune. Since that visit I'm dreaming of going back to the area. Oh how I wished I lived closer to France!!

  9. Oh, that would be wonderful fun (although I have to say that I'd avoid looking at the Hotel Dieu. I know....everyone loves the joint. I happen to think it typifies my mother's phrase "All the ugly that money can buy".....the Trump Towers of the 15th century).

That quite aside (and I doubt the good folks of Beaune care in the least what I think of their icon), the auction sounds wonderful.

A longtime, elderly friend of mine has, for decades, collected (and subsequently been given; presents for her are easy) old china, glassware, and table service from former institutions. She uses them at dinner parties. I'm not sure that she has two of any one pattern. Everything she has was orginally part of a set for, say, "The Great Southern Railroad" (when's the last time you ate off china in a regular railroad dining-car?), "Bridal Veil Falls Hotel", various small women's colleges.....all these places and institutions that either don't exist anymore or (if they do) certainly don't serve meals on china, with glassware embossed with the insitution's crest.

Similarly, I have two very nice (I have no idea how old they are) china tea-mugs, giddily emblazoned with the royal, be-crowned crest of Elizabeth II and the inscription "H.M. Prisons". Underneath that is "Birmingham Prison". I love the notion that, at one point in the 1950's or so, the wardens of Birmingham's (England, obviously...not alabama)grim prison had their tea in white china cups with the Queen's crest prominently displayed. Presumably, that emphasized a sense of purpose and dignified service to the crown.

In any case, times have changed......and thanks for the intriguing posting. I'm going to go to the website and see what they have.

    Level Best as Ever,

  20. You are so generous to share this event Sharon, maybe next year I can make it there. I think I would spend a fortune! Then I would have to have a sale myself to make room for the new 'old' stuff!
