the home made flower display

I love being offered a bouquet of flowers.  Guests arriving for dinner can always make me smile with a few roses or a posy of tulips.  A dear friend, a real gentleman, has flowers delivered to my door in the afternoon before a dinner, and that has to be the ultimate courtesy.

But for all the pleasure I get from a lovely bunch of fresh blooms, I may secretly enjoy them more in the following week, when some flower heads begin to fade and the bouquet is taken apart.

Because sometimes all it  takes to make a table look special is a few simple flowers and an assortment of interesting containers.

In these pictures I display flowers in old stone bottles, vintage jelly moulds, a jam pot and my favourite old cups.  Set against a backdrop of an old tureen or a pile of old books.  Takes a few minutes  and adds a little weekend interest to a table in the entrance hall.

How about you, do you have a favourite flower container, do you use stuff
that wasn't originally designed for flowers?

Wishing you a wonderful weekend, celebrating Easter, or simply enjoying friends and family.

  4. Lovely vignettes in the soft sunlight...charming photography! And, yes, I love to use uncommon containers for flower settings...kitchen cannisters in stainless steel are my go-to vases but I'll also work a little longer with cobalt wine bottles and glassware or blue-and-white Asian bowls and saki bottles.

  6. Love the stone bottles and jam pot. Do I see some ranunculus in the mix? Ranunculus are some of my favorite flowers and they are so hard to get here.

  7. I do the same thing. Once the original bouquet starts to fade, I edit it and put the remaining flowers in all sorts of vessels all over the house. Beautiful. Happy Easter Sharon.

  9. I confess to always taking my bouquets apart straight away, as I prefer simple small bunches of flowers to overly artful showpieces. Yours are beautiful.

  10. Beautiful groups of flowers - looks awesome.

I haven't really done much "thinking outside the vase" on flowers as far as real cuttings.

You have inspired me to look at things differently next time I have a pretty bouquet to take apart. Thank you for that!

  11. So much lovely inspiration. I love the soft colors of your blooms and the faded shades of your vintage containers. I have a favorite white ironstone pitcher that is always filled with tulips this time of year. It makes me happy just to look at them!
    Happy Weekend!

  12. Lovely ideas! I can only have fresh flowers in my bedroom - otherwise my cats EAT them. Bad kitties. But I do have a little bouquet in there all the time. I have a variety of little vases - some vintage Fire King Jadeite, some cups and jars, some interesting little containers - that I use for the flowers.

I'm loving alstroemeria right now. It's so delicate, so colorful, and lasts a long time.

  17. Beautiful arrangements! I am a lover of ranunculus but all flowers are beautiful.

I usually use vases from leftover flower arrangements that were given to me for the various holidays. Not very creative, I know but it seems I have them in all different sizes. HA

  20. Love your quirky/beautiful arrangements. I love using the yellow and green Tate and Lyle golden syrup tins alongside the red and black treacle tins for small things. An alternating row of these with cacti in a modern kitchen look great! Alison.

  24. What a gorgeous display! I love to use vintage bottles, teapots, old tin cannisters, jugs etc. to display my flowers, rather than the traditional vases. Have a lovely easter weekend Sharon. Leahx

  25. As always, you have a great sense of style.
Apologies for not leaving comments for quite some time. I'm still reading your delightful posts, but I'm limiting my time on the computer, and thus tend not to be leaving comments, in desperation of trying to improve my time management. Hopefully life will resume a comfortable rhythm soon so I can leave comments more regularly.
Best wishes for a safe and relaxing Easter.

  26. That just looks perfect! I will use anything I can as a vase, I can't believe how often friends have asked me "what are you going to do with that?" and I say put some flowers in it!
    Have a lovely Easter weekend.
