Even though we haven't reached the end of January, there is a deliciously spring like feel to the air. The birds have picked up on it and have dusted off their spring songs. Snowdrops are out in the garden and like every other woman in France I am beginning to think about Spring... and lighter weight clothes... and putting away those heavy jumpers that have so conveniently hidden the fact that in the winter we indulge in a little over eating.
UGH! Some things just have to be said!
So here we go, my insider view on how French women are preparing for the fast approaching spring.
First of all they are moving! Running, cycling, swimming, dancing, riding, walking or going to the gym - it's not what they do but how often. The experts say that 20 minutes a day of movement and exercise is enough to make a real difference. Walking the dog, cycling to the store, taking the stairs instead of a lift, in my case walking up the hill to feed the horses ...it all counts , especially for us bloggers who have too many temptations to stay sitting down!
Next they are drinking water , aqua, de l’eau! Lots of it, for a couple of weeks they forget about wine, champagne etc and drink a couple more glasses of water a day than they would normally. The winter holidays always brings too many opportunities to raise a glass of champagne or indulge in heavy meals, now is the time to repent!
Then of course their food, SIGH .... French women and their food, it is fascinating to see them surrounded by so many great things to eat and still stay slim. It's no secret , they hold back! They are reasonable, a little of everything, moderation, and avoid the carbs and the desserts! Three well balanced meals a day, no snacking, plenty of vegetables and light protein. I see it everyday, French women take their time over meals, they don't skip meals, but that doesn't mean they eat a lot.
One secret I can reveal to you is 'bouillon', light stock, preferably home made not from a cube. To be drunk with a few vegetables and even a little pasta. Delicious, satisfying, wholesome. Effective!
So what do you think? I know this stuff, you know this stuff, we read it every time we open a magazine, but for the French it is simply non-negotiable.
You want to be slim, you work at it. So here is my challenge to you, and to me: let February, March and April be the months that make the difference. Let us feel good ... à la francaise.
Feel inspired
feel French
feel the difference!
PS. sorry about the 'slogans' at the end, I've been watching Mad Men! :)

You inspired me:)good!
ReplyDeleteHi! Stopping into a few fave blogs, so interesting. I cannot imagine life without snacking though...it would be so boring:) Although thats probably why French women go into spring svelte and I need to figure out how I am going to lose 15-20 pounds!
ReplyDeleteOver this way, it feels like winter is just getting started, spring feels far away...but come March it will be in sight and I look forward to it.
I used to go every month to LA to take care of my showroom and would get the strangest looks....walking from my hotel to my showroom along North Robinson, Melrose, all the lovely street of West Hollywood, in La the land of the beautiful, everyone drives and pay a fortune for personal trainer.... I guess that is the french in me, if possible, I always walk, take the stairs, ride my bike, eat healthy and after the Holiday temptation, reverts to my beloved leek broth (home made of course!) Lost 4 poundsthese past 2 weeks with 5 more to go. Unfortunately, will be walking with a cast on and doctor's orders: limit walking to a minimum for the next 2 months.
ReplyDeleteI love Mad Men :)
ReplyDeleteI have set a challenge to myself to lose the "winter weight" by mid-March, which will be spring break here in Texas. Wish me luck!
Amen dahhling! "If you want to be thin work at it"..so true, become who you want to be! Great post!
ReplyDeleteI REALLY needed to read a post like this to kick my butt into gear!
ReplyDeleteWhat an inspiring post! I've been trying to diet all month and just yesterday finally had a day where I ate three small healthy meals, no snacks and didn't cheat! Why do we cheat on diets? Our willpower is so weak. lol. Thanks for the kick in my behind. Those photos really do it. I want my hips to look like that first photo!
ReplyDeleteVery good. It is true. I've lost nine lbs. since November by cutting back on portions, eating soup with my own boullion, and lots of veggies. I haven't tried to diet. Three meals a day and no snacking. xo Jenny
ReplyDeleteThank you for the inspiration. The cold winters in Chicago just make me want to eat, eat, eat. I will try to be more French in the upcoming months. :)
ReplyDeleteJill
Yes. I have already decided!
ReplyDeleteI've a long way to go, but you've inspired me! thanks for a needed push!
ReplyDeleteI am learning {albeit that I sometimes fall off of the wagon}, to avoid bringing home food that gets me into trouble.
ReplyDeleteIf you don't believe in the power of many glasses of water versus other bevies, just try it for a week.
I must say I love the French woman's attitude towards food and have adopted it as my own for the last twelve years. The Holiday's are brutal no matter how good you are. I am on the end stretch of loosing baby weight from number four and I am so excited to have access to my wardrobe again! Plus, we are going on a little Mid-March mini break so I have to be in a bathing suit much earlier than usual.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this reminder! I have a good 15-25 to go so there is no time for shenanigans!
I can only hope....
ReplyDeleteSpring is in the air here too - after getting 6 inches of snow on Saturday, it is up to 50 degrees today. Your post has inspired me to start shedding the winter "fluff" early this year - and trying to look like that fabulous women in the last picture by April for a beach vacation! Thanks for the inspiration, Cynthia
ReplyDeleteWonderful advice! And yes, as a blogger, we do indeed sit too much (at least the impetus to have interesting stories or photos to share gets us out into the real world). And I think it was Kate Moss who said, "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels," harsh but true! I would need to give up the carbs and dessert for the last bit of tummy tightening... sad!
ReplyDeletehaha, thanks for sharing! Corinna
I love the advice and pep talk. You are very inspiring. I have been looking for ways to cut back and for me, it is portions And forcing myself to get on my treadmill 20 minutes per day. I used to do an hour everyday and it left me with no desire to get back on. But I will. Thanks, Sharon!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
Quite inspiring.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration! Just what I needed.
ReplyDeleteI've been so good these last few months, my weight is the lowest it's been since 2002. I have only 10 (OMG I'm never going to make it) pounds to my goal.
Working in the food industry is a double edge sword. You're worked off your feet (which is good for weight loss), but you're making so many yummy things which you need to taste (not good for weight loss). Sigh...
The broth tip is an interesting trick I'll have to try. (If I can just keep myself from adding potatoes to it!)
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to eat like this for the past 7 years - I do indulge at times, and now I have 3 or 4 pounds to lose. This is a great post to kick me into gear! Merci!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration Sharon..I secretly started in December!!! and it really works, doing it the French way...
ReplyDeleteHugs
Erna
Great post, just what I needed! Thanks
ReplyDeleteI'm SO doing this French approach, so maybe just lick the wooden spoon than eat the entire cake i bake, right?? If i think French, i might convince myself i can feel French?? Off to walk the dog, again, actually i've already set out this year to totally change my routine & stress levels, i've been swimming 1km & walking 5km a day, plus the gym 3 times a week & that's me on holidays!! Love Posie
ReplyDeleteI love your blog. It feeds my Francophile soul. I just returned from a very brief week in Paris. I needed a shot France tonight.

Dearest Sharon,
ReplyDeleteWell I guess I'm already enough French as I've been from age 15 on svelte and the same size. No need to diet or to loose anything. It is true what you did write there and I can tell that the French women love to eat fresh vegetables and fruits. Contrary to the meat and starch diet the American in general consume and all way too high on sodium. That's my secret too I guess, cooking at home so you control what's in it before you eat it.
Love to you,
Mariette
Love, Love, love your beautifully well done blog! I look forward to what each day brings from your part of the world!
ReplyDeleteJust wondering if you would share your bouillon recipe with us. I would love to get started back with my weight loss with a french flair!
You've inspired me to make the next three months count. Merci! And I'm also a Mad Men fan! ~ Sarah
ReplyDeleteOui, oui - everything you said is so true. We don't need a lot of something to truly enjoy it - a small amount and time to savour it is all.
ReplyDeleteI'm in!
Oh it's so true, the little ' extra ' on the tummy and bottom doesn't disappear without the exercise and attention to diet..
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI'm inspired! Especially by the picture of the lovely bikini at the end of the post. Is it still available if so can you let me know where from. It will make sure I stick to the healthy eating if I see it!
Thanks
Joanna
but french cheese is so good!
ReplyDeleteAs you like Kiraz, do you know Matthieu Forichon and his new artbook "Paris poétique"?
I needed this. Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I needed this. We will have a wedding this coming fall (our youngest son) and I have to be trim, even just a few lbs. would make a difference, I'm certain). :-)
ReplyDeleteKaren
Great post! Great advice!
ReplyDeleteLove your words of wisdom! OK, I'll go get myself a drink of water right now...thanks!
ReplyDeleteI am with you here! Lots of fruit I do eat already but but I need to eat more veggies. Oh and snacking is allowed for me as I snack mostly nuts, almonds, and fruit. I prefer a clementine or an apple so much over some chocolate!
ReplyDeleteLove that bikini, too, as the lady waring it has nearly as little as me to cover with it and it looks so pretty!
…
That was a little break to have a glass of water :-)
Oh and my great challenge seems to be keeping my legs showable all the time. During the cold months I seem to like keeping my fur for the extra bit of warmth L This has to stop! Any great recommendations for epilation?
I didn't follow your blog when you first posted this but I love to read it now. This could not have been more "right on" for February 11th. I've pulled my copy of "French Women Don't Get Fat" off the bookshelf. Time to change my mindset for the coming spring. -Janis
