parisian coutyards

Have you ever walked down a street in Paris, wondering what was the other side of those imposing façades and wide coach entrances.  The secret side of Paris, the intimate side normally own seen by those who live there.   Square pavés or cobblestone, plants cared for by the concierge, inward gazing windows.   Quiet places, strangely silent and empty after the bustle of the street outside the door.  A place to park your bike, feed a cat, enjoy a little green, some extra space. Thought you might like a glimpse .

thanks to Mires Paris for pictures

  6. I love peaking through those big imposing doors and seeing the private, magical courtyard within. The last time we were in Paris, we rented an apartment. Opening our door, and stepping into our own courtyard made us feel much more like true Parisians.

  10. Love Court yards! When we renovated, the house got turned around completely and I opted for court yards wherever possible, no less than six! I love how one enters through a door or gate and there is a surprise on the other side..you gave me an idea for future posts....on my courtyards.xo Col

  11. I certainly love these well-kept French court yards!
But in general I love courtyards, they can give such a good background for any kind of planting design.
And - my favorite ones are real oldfashion "Hinterhoefe", just charming and very often full of daily lifes history.

    Lovely images! k

  13. Thank you for sharing these. When we were in Paris in 2004 and 2008 I would walk by the open gates, carriage doors etc and I would catch a glimpse of the potted plantings and was so intrigued, I even photographed what I could from the doorway.
