French mattress ticking

I have long had a thing about French mattress ticking, but this year have been lucky enough to find a couple of particularly old pieces.  How do I know they are so old?  Well, because they have little hand sewn eyelets placed strategically over the ticking, these were used to lace the ticking down to the old wool or horse hair filled mattresses.

My favourite piece could pass itself off as a Ralph Lauren design with its bold red, beige and black stripes.

So periodically I get them out of the cupboard and hum, and ha, and muse with the idea of making cushions etc.  Today I wondered about grosgrain ties through the eyelets, or cushions made up with linen from my postal bags.

What would you do with this fabric?  I've already sold pieces like this and I know they've gone to excellent homes, maybe I should just let go of these too ...

  1. Hello Sharon

These are beautiful pieces of fabric. I would say keep them in a trunk - they are not taking up much room and they will continue to bring you joy and the anticipation of what to do with them will always interest you.

  3. Wonderful, but I wouldn't be able to let a pair of scissors get near them. Keep them for yourself!

  4. That's so interesting.....the little handsewn eyelets. I am probably in the minority here, but I say use them in a way that continues to bring you joy. If that means cutting them.........

  8. Sharon,

I love fabric alot and can always think of ways to incorporate them into design.

    For this fabric: a duvet,
quilt (machine sewn as a blanket),
    apron
    grocery bags
a pair of coveralls for gardening
    slipcover for a chair
cushions for outdoor bench or dining chairs.

It's lovely an great colors for the winter into christmas season.

  10. I have a wonderful little quilt with red and white toile on one side and the red and white ticking on the other.
I want to collect much more of it , my husband worries about finding himself surrounded by toile et ticking :)

  12. Ohhhh, those colors are soooo pretty, the pillow is fantastic too!

I usually drape my favorite linens or vintage fabric over a large piece of furniture so that I can enjoy it daily.

  13. I absolutely love the red, cream and black striped ticking and would make a slip cover for my wing chair - would be perfect!

I've never seen this one before so thanks for sharing.

  14. Dearest Sharon,

My idea would be to crochet a nice ribbon lace from pure linen twine and pull that through. That creates an authentic antique look! The grossgrain ribbon somehow does not belong with this rare antique ticking. Just an idea and rather simply done...
    Love to you,

  15. Maybe keep them in an open cupboard where you can enjoy seeing them until you know for sure how you want to use them. Ive always enjoyed the magic of fabric even when Im not sure what they will be one day. Fiona

  17. wow, really love the lines and colors of these vintage fabrics you have found. This reminds me of all the vintage swatches of delicate linen and cotton which I used to organize when I worked at a vintage European textile firm...
