THIS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA!!
Pretty? Yes, but still not a good idea.....
One of our large wisterias is in full second bloom of the season,
and is threatening to drown my laundry room!
Hate to think how much weight there is on the roof ... oh dear !
I love the second flowering on a wisteria, more subtle than the first flowering that appears before any leaves, but even I have to admit that this baby is getting out of hand - it has ideas above it's station and will have to gently, or not so gently, be brought back under control ... Sigh ...
The only place I have seen a whole building covered by a wisteria is at the entrance to the famous National Trust garden of Hidcote (below) in the UK. The year the roof needed repairs, they found a company willing to suspend the wisteria by crane, re-tile beneath the wisteria hanging in mid air then gently relower. Needless to say the National Trust and I do not enjoy the same budget !

OMG who knew they could be so pretty and menacing at the same time! Good luck in getting them under control...obviously they really like their home:)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and threatening at the same time!
ReplyDeleteBetter for you...I have the same "giant baby" on my "facade" and yes, you should prune it!
ReplyDeleteOr it will raise the tiles on your roof...not good!!
Anyway...it looks soooo beautiful!
I totally agree with you: the second bloom is much more beautiful than the first one!
Love your blog! We once lived in an older home with a wisteria that had been planted on the side yard many years before our arrival. I think that plant thought she owned the home...talk about a plant with a mind of her own...
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking of the expression "too much of a good thing". Pity.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful bad idea!
ReplyDeleteI have one that has taken over my fence and up the trees. I love it when it blooms and the smell is wonderful. We are going to prune it within an inch of it's life to get it under control. I wish you luck too. Kathy
ReplyDeleteIt's sooo beautiful, though! I have a honeysuckle vine on one of my garden trellises that's doing the same thing - but I can't bring myself to cut it back. An entire flock of birds lives in there!
ReplyDeleteBonjour- I have just found your beautiful blog. You should keep a close eye on that gorgeous wisteria of yours. We had one on a trellise at the back of our Seattle home and after fighting it twice a year trying to prune it back, we finally had to remove it altogether. By that time, the plant had grown so strong it had crushed part of the wood trellise, found its way under the roof, and even crushed a big post on our deck! Beautiful and dangerous!-- I will come back and check out the rest of your post later this week. We have just returned from a long trip to Europe and things are busy around here. ReplyDeleteWe had wisteria at our old house and it does get out of hand! But it is oh so pretty when it blooms!
ReplyDeleteKat :)
Hello there, I've driven through the countryside here in the States and we have literally seen wisteria covering an entire house. Although the house was deserted it was quite invasive. I love wisteria so much and the scent is so heavenly, but enough is enough. And it's usually when I prune something it grows twice as big as it used to be. I think I would just prune as much as need be and plan on constantly having to prune it. Good luck to you!
ReplyDeleteLove your blog !
Sharon, I adore wisteria too and have it on our terrace..but we prune it ruthlessly because it just creeps in everywhere....We had it all in the bedrooms upstairs and couldn't get the windows closed properly! Now it's not so pretty but much more manageable....Good luck with it....xv
ReplyDeleteI have a 3 year old wisteria growing on the front porch of my home. I want it to grow "up" but it seems to have a mind of it's own and wraps around chairs...anything in it's way. It is so pretty though. What will you do about yours?
ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
Dear Sharon,
ReplyDeleteWe love Wisteria! However, it takes over and needs a firm guardian. If ever in louisiana during the spring season there is a small town called St. Francisville where this beautiful vine has taken over the country side. Absolutely Beautiful to see!
Thank you for the giggle regarding the UK National Trust budget vs. yours (could not help by laugh out loud)! Good luck and have a great week!
XO,
Renee and Angela
This is so beautiful! Too bad that it is taking over the house, literally. Hopefully you can find a solution that is less expensive than the National Trust but still allows you to keep it!
ReplyDeleteYour Wisteria is gorgeous Sharon but never a good idea to let something that gets wet hang on a building. There isn't enough weight to do damage, if your building is in good shape.
ReplyDeleteit's so beautiful - but I too wouldn't have the funds to hire a crane! is there a way to add a pergola off od the bathroom??
ReplyDeleteI just love wisteria but have never had it so in my next house I really want to try it. So this post was very interesting. Does your laundry smell divine? Fiona
ReplyDeleteDon't be fooled! Actually, you need to be ruthless and it will still flower for you. Keep only the stems with the "hands" that are the future flowers and cut the rest.
ReplyDeleteSharon- I received your package, intact. Thanks much! And also thanks for the little something...;]
Now, promise you'll recruit your husband to help with the wisteria pruning!
Oh my...I did a post a while back on the beauty of wisteria. I would never have guessed all of the trouble they could cause!!
ReplyDeleteIf you have a local Craigslist just post "Free Wisteria", then have people come and cut pieces under your supervision! It roots readily!
ReplyDeleteJust a little something I learned from Tom Sawyer! LOL!
Sharon,
ReplyDeleteEt oui ! Une glycine c'est romantique quand ça grimpe et pousse un peu partout... Mais c'est un problème sur les toits ! Allez-vous la tailler ?
It looks gorgeous, hope your roof handles the pressure!
ReplyDeleteTrudy
I think you need to give it a short back and sides, it will come back again and it is sooo beautiful
ReplyDeleteThis is the most beautiful blog! What a shame! Too much beautiful Wisteria!
ReplyDeleteOne day I also seen on my morning walk. that a whole building covered by a wisteria is at the entrance to the famous National Trust garden of Hidcote in the UK.
ReplyDeleteLovely photos. I have planted one, and only seen it bloom once. I am greeen with "positive" envy.
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful, what an outstanding photographer you are!
