Preparing for the fair, I knew I needed a bed to show the linens, but wouldn't have the space to take a huge double bed. I found a pair of vintage single beds and reworked them. Here's the before and after, an easy project that anyone could handle. And old beds like this can be found world wide, usually going for a song.
I wanted to use the slight recess on the head and foot of the bed to put an upholstered panel. So after painting the beds, I cut pieces of wood to size, and covered them with padding and an old piece of vintage ticking. My staple gun came into its own again here.
On the head panel I wanted three buttons. I had pre-pierced holes in the right place before covering. Now I just had to sew through the wood and attach the buttons. For extra strength I placed a thin flat button on the back as well.
My only solution for putting the panels into place was glue, quick and easy!
I really planned to show you the two beds set up in the garden covered with some of the cushions I've been making for the fair, but we are having alot of showers today, and I didn't have a long enough dry moment to put it all together. I'm sure you get the picture.
I'm sure loads of you have already done this sort of project, I'd love to hear about it.
PS I seem to have lost the 'follow' buttons on my blogs -
anyone have any bright ideas about retrieving them?!
I'd be grateful to hear if this has happened to you to
Thank you

They look so fresh and lovely and restful! I've never upholstered - I'm more of a wrap-it-in-fabric-and-pin-it kind of decorator. I'd be tempted to stay home this weekend and fit those beds with mattresses and nap in the shade!
ReplyDeleteGreat job.....I don't think there is anything you can't do...dear friend.

ReplyDeleteAs far as the follower button, mine is missing too and so are alot of other bloggers. I also can't post correctly or comment on blogs???
I hope this all gets fixed soon.
Have a great weekend.
My followers button and images seems to come and go in the last week - so strange.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely job you have done - I love fabric on beds - wish I could just pop over!
Warmly,
Angela
Dearest Sharon,
ReplyDeleteYes, you are NOT alone in this, my readers vanished since I got back from Atlanta yesterday and only briefly they were back. I couldn't comment on some blogs either. Heard from several bloggers who lost everything so yesterday I went ahead and did back up my blog and posted about how to do this so others can save their precious stories and comments too. I have my blog always emailed to me (under settings; email & mobile just put your own address there) so when I save that weekly I have at least that and than backing up every week; all taken care of. You're welcome to have a look at my blog of the 27th.
Now to your upholstery job of the old bed. There are not that many women like you that are creative and HANDY! You certainly got two golden hands and just transform things in a dream. I love your blog because of it as it stands out from others as you do things yourself! You don't need plagiarism as your head is full of your own ideas and besides, you're in an excellent area for hunting down treasures.
Have a great weekend!
Mariette
Love the bed makeover. i am not" a do it yourself " anymore simply for lack of time.
ReplyDeleteI also have experienced problems after problems lately, loosing comments, not being able to access the blog...it feels as the network is being hacked.
So sorry not to see you at the show! It looks like I could fill up my basket in record time with your goodies. Your beds are perfect and great use of ugly old ones Good luck!
ReplyDeletePerfect. Seriously perfect. That is JUST what I want to do to MY bed! Now just to find those same type of head/foot boards! (I obviously need a trip to a few local brocantes.)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the tutorial!
Kind regards, Kitty
Love the beds...I think I'd have used Velcro so it could be switched out easily. Your sale looks like it was work but great fun too.
