an improvised lunch


When two of my favourite girlfriends asked themselves to lunch here yesterday, I was very happy until I realised that my fridge was empty, I had no time to shop, and I didn't even have any flowers to stick in a vase!!

A closer inspection of the fridge revealed the presence of eggs, cream, bacon and cheese.  In my books that makes a quiche lorraine and lurking in the bottom drawer I found a suitable salad, to accompany.



A check through the deep freeze produced a bag of plum halves from last autumn, easily transformed in to a plum tart.



Still no flowers to put on the table or in the sitting room.  When all else fails turn to the garden!  No cutting flowers to speak of at this time of year but  I do have an abundance of snowdrops - or galanthus nivalis as a kind friend in Baltimore calls them.  Trowel in hand, I dug up a few small clumps from where the snowdrops shouldn't have been in the first place,  and grabbed some equally illicit moss.

Searching for  a way to bring my outdoors indoors, I avoided the traditional pots and planters and used some old cake moulds I had in the back of a cupboard.  What my arrangement lacked in professional finish it made up for as a talking point!

  1. What???? That lovely enticing wonderful meal just came together....like that???? I am most impressed! Wow, you are quite resourceful and obviously have a keen eye on not only how to bring life to a table with gorgeous flowers but good food too!

  2. Dear Sharon, I love urns, large and small, all designs, colors and styles. And I like to dig up bulbs of all kinds and force them to bloom early. Winters are long here.
    Your luncheon must have been a delight for your friends. A feast for the eyes and the stomach.
    I have frozen plum halves in my freezer. Dear Sharon, would you please share your recipe for the plum tart. It looks delicious.

  3. I love how you put this all together.
    This is what I call the real Savoir faire! Anybody can go out and grab a bouquet of flowers at their florists and the ingredients for recipes at the local supermarket but being able to use what you have (and with style) is quite frankly ....Art! Bravo and thanks for the inspiration ;)

  6. The snow drops look lovely.
    I like to use old blue and white china cups with small daffodills planted in them and also a slightly larger cup with a hyacinth bulb.
    Three in a row look great.

    I can't say I can be that creative at a moment's notice. This would have taken me days to achieve!

    Favourite flower container? Well, looking at your divine creation, I do have to say that I'm quite impressed with using unconventional items! I will strive to do that in the future. Expect the unexpected!

  10. I'm so impressed! What a beautiful luncheon! Wish I could invite myself over, too. :-) And such a clever way to bring flowers into the home. My favorite containers are little bits I've picked up at the puces in Paris -- nothing matches, but they all contain lovely memories.

  12. Oh of course! You're so creative - a lunch from nothing and a floral arrangement worthy of the finest table. You're a wonder.

    I love, love, love putting spring tulips in my collection of vintage Fire King Jadeite vases and milk glass vases. Love it.

  14. You are a girl after my own heart:) My Brother used to always say my Mom made the best meals when she couldn't get to the store, and had nothing in the house. I think it is a combination of creativity and working under pressure. The meal is fit for a Queen, and mouth watering to say the least, and the charm of your floral arrangements are perfection. I love how you arranged the snowdrops as well...unfortunately the only arrangement I could make right now would be with dead branches and snow! lol! I truly love what you did. The quiche looks delicious and plums are my favorite!

    What a wonderful impromtu luch and, snowdrops are my favourite flower. We don't have many cutting flowers in our garden at this time of year but, I can always fashion something from the foliage, berries and twigs and it always looks lovely.....sometimes better that if I had bought a bunch of flowers !! XXXX

  29. Kudos to you! How impressive that on the spur of the moment you can whip up a quiche, a tart, a salad, and transform garden plants into a wonderful centerpiece.   32. Those molds are perfect flower containers! Love your idea. I like to use an old enamel coffee pot and an old soup tureen as flower containers. Also, I really love to use old ironstone pitchers.
