beds and monogrammes

Brocante atmosphere here, what with the bed and a load of monogrammed sheets I got my little greedy hands on today.

The bed first, (I showed it to you this week)  there is progress, but slower than I had hoped for.  I'm using a flame thrower thermal paint stripper and good old fashioned sand paper to take off the paint.  The bed is not that old and the wood underneath is a very ordinary beech.  So either I sand it down completely and re-paint, or I half finish the sanding to achieve a sort of chippy shabby effect.  For the moment I'm sticking to the second idea, half sanded then waxed.

Here is a detail before and after

and these are two side bars, one sanded, one the original version

Now I just have the rest to do!

I'll soon be ready to re-upholster and, having found a load more monogrammed sheets, I am seriously tempted to use their beautiful creamy colour to upholster the bedhead and foot.  I'd probably place the monogramme centred on the foot of the bed.

Look at the choice I have!!

and most exciting of all a perfect pair with a stunning huge  RM on each, these are in perfect condition, I love them, and I also have a third RM in a slightly more simple style.

Over to you now, I love it when I get feedback on my renovation ideas.
What would you do for paint finish and upholstery?

  8. I say sand it down and repaint and reupholster. The monograms are a great idea but I tend to prefer them on paper as later down the track you might want to sell it.

    Love your blog!

  9. What a beautiful, graceful bed. The monograms are a perfect fit.

Do you have the spray called Scotchgard there? It soil-proof fabrics. I'd give the linens a good shot of that before putting them on the bed so it will always look fresh.

I did two rough woven cotton fabric couches with Scotchgard and they never soiled--even with 2 teenagers!

    Cheers,

  13. Paint with a very dry brushing of light gray or use Annie Sloans chalk paint and then definitely use these linens for the upholstery. These are gorgeous!!

  16. Keep scraping Sharon I can't wait to see the finish! That is going to look so amazing, I would do exactly what you're doing scrape and then maybe highlight areas with a darker tone...gray? and then wax it. Use the linen, linen goes with everything. Work girlfriend your loyal subjects want to see!

  19. Since R & M are our initials & if the bed was for us I'd love to see them on both the head & foot boards.
I'll be back to see the end result, I'm sure whatever you choose will look great.

  21. My instinct tells me to paint the bed frame black. Upholster with a soft Ventian green or faded back and white vertical stripes. Plain white would work as well.

But I wouldn't use the old linens with a black frame, rather with the half paint-stripped frame.

  22. What a wonderful idea to use the old linens you have. If they are is good as shape as you've shown, they will be lovely.
I like the distressed look of the wood on the bed frame, the only thing I might be is put a grayish glaze over the frame to bring out a bit of the grain. This would add some contract between the frame and the upholster boards.
    Just my two cents...

  23. Perfect! Your ideas are perfect for this bed. R-M monogram centered in the middle of the foot of the bed & partly sanded, chippy wood. Can't wait to see the completed bed & bedroom.

  24. Oh, definitely. So definitely use one of those monogrammed sheets to upholster the headboard. And another one for the footboard. And then paint the trim a slightly greyish robin's egg blue.

    That's what I'd do.

  25. I would hire the men on the industrial estate down the road to do it all for me. I do not trust myself with a staple gun nor would I attempt hospital corners with upholstery fabric. I wouldn't have a clue about wadding and it would all end in tears. You are extremely brave and talented. Deb xx

  26. What you are doing is fabulous and timeless
Question, what type of wax will you use (following the half sanding) and does the waz need to be reapplied later?
