kitchen layout

This year should be the year that we renovate and rethink our kitchen.  Inevitably I find myself looking hard at kitchen layout in magazines and on the net.

First, I have to come to terms with the fact that to have a wonderful sprawling brick-walled kitchen like this first picture, my house would need to be about 150 years older, and at least 4 times the size!!  Come back down to earth Sharon!!

Thought you might enjoy this Parisian kitchen and breakfast room.  I like the way they have used the L-shaped space, I love the quirky window and door, love the huge generous curtain that could pull across the whole wall in the evening.  I like the black paintwork with the chequered floor; the hang down lamps and the terrace garden immediately outside the door and window.

  1. Beautiful inspiration pictures. It looks like you gravitate to darker cabinets, and deep color in kitchens?

The architectural space absolutely dictates the kitchen, and I am often quite struck at the creativity of architects and home owners in re imagining spaces.

  2. Do I see black cabinets and checkered floors in your kitchen future? Who COULD resist the garden view? The low window is certainly unusual architecturally... The brick walls in the first picture make for a warm/rustic/timeless environment....I like it!

  3. I have always loved European kitchens because they often have no upper cabinets... a great idea if the area is large. The first photograph is my favorite.

  4. Stunning images Sharon and while I love that first image I know it isn't possible for most. The second kitchen is pratical and beautiful, can't wait to see what you go for.

  6. Hi we too are planning a kitchen! So I know how many choices there are and it can be overwhelming for sure. The first kitchen is BEAUTIFUL....WOW!
I looove black in a kitchen, we have a large pantry/small prep kitchen and I am doing it all in black with some glazing and carerra marble coutnertops. Very european and old school...love it. Hope you will let us know if and when you decide to redo your own....

  7. Wow, you picked some beautiful ones for your inspiration! It's hard not to get lost in huge dreams...I'd take #1 in a second! I can't wait to see what you come up with...the rest of your home is lovely so I'm sure your new kitchen will be more than beautiful ~ all I could do was repaint and call it good...but it did help in the meantime!

  10. Sharon, your posts are very inspiring. I am in much need of a kitchen remodel. Let's see, so far I want a formal garden like the photos you showed a few days ago and now I want the kitchen above. I have my work cut out! Enjoy your day!

  17. Bonsoir Sharon,
Cette grande cuisine aux murs de briques est très belle ! J'aime beaucoup les matériaux anciens, et aussi la pierre noire, alors bonnes réflexion pour votre nouvelle cuisine !

  18. Gorgeous! I want to move in, to both, right now.

I do love my kitchen, though. It's filled with the gorgeous green of Fire King Jadeite, it's big and sunny.

One tip, though: if you have a cooktop set into the counter, be sure there's enough space on either side of it for food prep. And also, make sure you have an expanse of countertop somewhere in the kitchen for laying out big projects and meals with lots of ingredients.

    Have fun planning!

  19. Brick-walled kitchens can be tough to remodel but with inspirations like these you can have one even with a small area.

  20. if you can't have the brick walled kitchen console yourself with the knowledge that brick walls are a terrible dust trap and not at all practical and if you can you dont need to worry about that as everyone is too bizzy saying wow to notice!

If you chose something like the black kitchen I may suggest you not to have a black top...you will never stop dusting then!! Oh my!!!!

kitchen top and she's getting mad with the dust thing!!
