In France we have no turkey day! - A poem for Thanksgiving

You already knew I can't draw, you're about to discover I can't write poetry.  A yearning to have a celebration and forget that winter is arriving. My ode to thanksgiving, or a holiday I can't join in with!

I wish we had a turkey day
to bring some festive cheer
I wish we had good reason
to bring our loved ones near
I wish we could shut out the cold
and warm our house right up
with friends, with kin, with family
invited in to sup

I want to dress my table
I want to light warm fires
I want to fill the house
with smells of roast meats, sweets and wines
I want to have soft music
I want to offer thanks
for our rich and happy living
with oh!  such trivial wants

But traditions aren't invented
they come down through the times
they're in our blood. they can't be bought
like some expensive wine,
so I'm glad for friends so happy
to celebrate Thanksgiving,
and I'll wait my turn till Christmas
to light my Yuletide pudding!

Un très joyeux Thanksgiving à toutes mes amies!

  2. You captured the thoughts...It's a nice holiday since there is no pressure to buy, wrap, send. Although those things are starting to creep in but I love the smells, the special dishes, the sleepy post Turkey hangin' out with family. And then shop like crazy on Black Friday!!!!

  4. I love your poem! Well done and by the way -- know just how you feel. I do have Thanksgiving in a country where it doesn't exist. You can too! We invite our friends over (Friday night here because everyone works) and we have Thanksgiving every year. I am American living in Australia. Have a dinner to give Thanks. Your friends and family will love an invite!

  6. So sweet. Thanksgiving is my favorite and though I dream of life in France it would be sorely missed.
Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving... sans turkey.

  7. Yes Sharon I'm with you. We don't do Thanksgiving Down Under, but I've been in the U.S. on Thanksgiving weekend & I was very envious of all the parents being greeted by their grown children with uber enthusiasm at Airports. Like you, we'll just have to bide our time 'til Christmas & then we can let loose!

  10. Sweet thoughts! But I have a feeling that your house doesn't miss much when it comes to filling it with warmth and family and friends. You're simply too lovely for it to not be filled with love. And there's need to wait for an occasion or tradition to be thankful. Have a wonderful, warm, fabulous week.

  12. Im a Brit so dont miss what we have never had, but if I were you I'd celebrate wherever I was, isn't it about the people not the place?
liked the poem was much better than anything I could compose.

  13. Wonderful poem! And you CAN have a Thanksgiving on a different level. How about a dinner with family and friends to celebrate all you are thankful for...including them! xo Diana

  14. Great poem written with a touch of yearning! My daughter lived in Scotland for a year and fixed Thanksgiving for several of their friends and co workers. It was a real novelty to them but they all loved it! Football always accompanies Thanksgiving here so they streamed in a game from the US on their computer!

  15. Y'all can come over to our house in East Texas! We should have a house full of friends and family. There is always plenty and everyone is welcome.
