what colour my shutters?

A little assistance required if you don't mind, dear friends.  I'm about to paint the shutters ,and maybe the doors, on our guest cottage and I can't decide to go for white or dark grey!  I know how clever you all are, I'm sure you'll be able to help me decide.

Here's the cottage as it is,  a main door and three little windows with shutters.  The window woodwork will be refreshed but stays white.

Bear in mind that the cottage has shade from large trees.  The shutters are rarely closed, although they all function properly, for us they are decorative.

As you can see from my blog header, the shutters on the main house are white, but we have other woodwork that is dark grey, such as the barn doors and those on the workshop and wood shed.

White would look brighter, but good sense tells me that, beneath those trees, the dark grey will stay looking good for longer.

I'm not very clever on the special effects front, but I fiddled around on Paint to imagine what white would look like.

So what do you think?
If you have any ideas on this I'd be delighted to hear.  Thank you.
Wishing you  a very happy weekend.

  1. The gray, for sure, is my vote! But...what about introducing another color? hmm. something very French, as in blue? Or maybe a grayed blue?
I think the white is crisp, but just not very interesting...
    Look forward to seeing!

  2. I agree, a gray with lots of blue in it! What a lovely property you have...

  3. I vote gray, but would also consider a slightly taupey/barely brown gray just to make it a special entity on the property. Going out on a limb here, but even a dusky, imperceptibly purple gray?

Your property is very special. We are in awe over here in the states!

  4. I would go with Gray. Very authentic and in keeping with the age of the cottage.

Farrow and Ball Pigeon would look amazing-it has a greeny-tinge.

    It looks absolutely charming!

  9. Hello Sharon !
    Le cottage à l'air très agréable !
Pour la couleur des volets, je dirais gris foncé, je trouve cela chic et moins banal que le blanc...
    à bientôt !

  10. I think grey would be so lovely against the stone. Whatever you decide though, I know it will look fabulous.

  11. You know, I am not sure I would paint them at all unless really needed. I love their rustic earthy look. If you did paint them then I am with the grey clan. It will be exciting to see what happens.

  12. Hi Sharon! Come stai?
Did I already mention how much I love your garden cottage???
Dark Grey, that would be my choice.
I would love dark forest green or lighter sage green too, the're both wonderful with white windows as those of your cottage!
I have dark green "volets" with white windows, I love them!
Have a good Sunday my dear Sharon.
    Yours,
    Fra

  15. Ooooooooooo! I loved the sage green looking color in the first picture. That's what I would do! I pick white - because it is brighter and cheerier. I also think it would be adorable to match your own. I agree the gray would be easier, but I'd go with white for the cheer factor! :)

  16. The lighting is different in every country, the same building on the other side of the world near the coast I probably would choose white , going on what you have said I would say defiantly the blueish grey. I also like the rustic look of them now.

  17. Hi, I just came across your blog and I love it! Have just become a follower. Re your question, I would definately go gray, perhaps a gray bordering blue. I just put some shutters on an old wall I have in my garden to make it look frenchy, you may want to have a look, even though the blue I used is too blue. take care, Maryann
