I wandered lonely

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed---and gazed---but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

William Wordsworth
Written 1804
England's most popular poem

  2. Lovely. I remember how outstanding the daffodils in Bath were one year when I visited in March. Here in Canada our daffodils don't come out for another couple of weeks - I noticed some buds this morning. The photos you have to go with the poem are superb.

    Happy Easter!

  4. Thank you for your sweet comment. No, I didn't paint those radishes~ but aren't they wonderful? I found that some place and haven't been able to remember where. I've held onto it for at least 6 months. Have a lovely weekend and do stop by again.

  6. C'est très beau un champs de "daffodils" !
    J'ai vu la maison de W.Wordsworth à Ridal Mount ( Lake District )
    et j'ai aquarellé un intérieur très surprenant avec des murs verts !

  10. Sharon...I love this!! You could not have picked a better photo to compliment the poem.

    ....A host, of golden daffodils;
    Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
    Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.....

    We are off to Wordsworth country this week to explore the Lake District. I can't wait...I hear it is beautiful!

    I just read a mention on a book by AS Byatt 'Unruly Times' about the friendship between William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge...looks intriguing. Are you familiar with it??

    Hope you are having a wonderful day !!

    Jeanne :)
